Moments Make The Wedding

A wee while back we had the great honour of capturing wedding photos for Kim & Darren’s big day.

Although they’d been together for a number of years, it was time to make it official; surrounded by family and friends in a day devoted to celebration.

From the moment we saw Kim step out of their beloved Morris Minor, we knew this was going to be one to remember.

The ceremony began with sons Tierran and Dylan walking Kim down the aisle to a slightly nervously awaiting Darren.  Officiated by their friend Alvin, flanked by best friends Allison (best gal) and Mark (best man), and with daughter Bailey watching over their flower princess Bella in the wings, the ceremony was very personal.

Kim and Darren hired out Berwick Lodge for the whole event.  Talk about a picturesque location.

As soon as we heard where the wedding was being held the photo shoot ideas flowed.  There were wooded areas, water not too far away, grassy areas, and some wacky locations such as the confidence course.  We had even talked about the groom and best man taking a ride down the flying fox for some action shots.

Alas, it wasn’t to be.  Persistent rain leading up to the wedding and intermittent showers throughout the day meant we had to do a little improvisation with the photos.

That’s when we discovered the sauna.  What a great location for family shots!  It wasn’t entirely without fault, unfortunately it meant having a large metal cage in the middle of some shots; but it was better than the alternative and we could easily work with it.

There are some advantages to having wide angle lenses in your kit, and it just goes to show that sometimes it pays to over-pack your gear.  You never know when it’ll come in handy!

So there everyone was piling in and out of a lodge sauna for family photos, with some pretty funny moments in between.  As it turned out, when we dropped the photos off to the bride, she mentioned that one of her favourite shots of the day was this one of the family taken in the sauna:

From here we scooted over the hill to Darren’s father’s place, where the sun came out just in time for a few quick shots.  Then a hasty trip back to the lodge just in time for the reception.

It’s weddings like this that make it all worth it.  Having the privilege of capturing their special day truly was an honour. The moments of pure emotion, love, laughter, and celebration throughout the entire day as they mingled with family and friends was incredible to witness.

Congratulations Kim and Darren, here’s to many more years of happiness ahead.
