Making the Most of Stolen Moments

Life can get hectic at times.  With so much going on it can feel like there’s no light in a never ending tunnel.  It’s easy to get lost in day to day living and loose sight of what’s really important.  It’s also easy to forget that every day we’re alive, is a day we can be thankful for.

We’ve both been going a little stir crazy and our lives have been so frantic and unforgiving that when a last minute change of plans meant we had a few spare hours the next day, Layton suggested we make use of the time and selfishly take some time out for ourselves.

When we awoke the next morning the weather was particularly rubbish.

For those of you that know us or follow our work, you’ll know bad weather doesn’t usually deter us.  In fact it tends to elicit a trip rather than prevent it.  Although it may not seem like it, even we have limits though.  It was quite depressing then that it seemed we weren’t destined to go anywhere.

We hadn’t actually decided on a destination for the trip, so when we saw a brief glimmer of hope to the North that was all the encouragement we needed.  We were heading to Glenorchy for the day.  This is a little township about an hour from Queenstown in the South Island of New Zealand.

Thankfully, by the time we got there we were blessed with lovely, moody, overcast skies.  Perfect photography weather!

This trip also marked the first outing for the Nikon F5 film camera, which was an experience in itself.  Layton’s not sure how the photos will come out, but it taught him a few things about his photography.  Plus it was pretty finny watching him ‘chimping‘ after each shot and realising that all he could see on the LCD display was the ISO settings.  If there are any worth sharing by the time we get them processed you can be sure they will make it on to the blog at some point!

There are two galleries below from our day trip.  The first two images in the first gallery are from Glenorchy.  This is a very picturesque wee town and we really didn’t end up spending the amount of time we would’ve liked to have spent there.  We’re definitely planning a return trip, perhaps over night this time so we can really explore this wee town and what it has to offer.

The remaining photos in this gallery are from further round the head of Lake Wakatipu.

One of our favourite spots from round this way is the ‘House of Ruins’.  I’ve talked about this previously during the round up of Week 24’s 365 Photo Challenge.  This is one of our ‘must stops’ when travelling this road.  The house has so many interesting facets.  Not only that but there’s a really cool rusted truck skeleton out the back as well.  What more could a photographer ask for!

The second gallery is a few shots from Queenstown’s Steamer Wharf as we were heading back home again.

It’s a testament to the cold weather that most of the restaurants in this area supply blankets or snuggle sack type polar fleece coverings for those brave enough to dine Al-Fresco.

Do you ever just jump in the car and go somewhere on the spur of the moment?  Leave a comment and let us know about your journeys or drop us a link to your latest road trip blog post.

Thanks for stopping by, we hope to see you again soon.
