Getting back to basics

Exciting times lay ahead for us!  We’ve just managed to secure a Nikon F5 – one of the last professional film SLR cameras released by Nikon.

Despite loving the D800 Layton’s been looking at getting back into film photography recently.  He really misses the look and feel of film as well as the need for learned precision that using film creates (compared to the shutterbug nature of digital).

Now to track some film down…

Busy! And That’s Just The Way We Like It.

Over the past few weeks we’ve been pretty busy.  From client shoots, to self development experimental shoots, developing ideas for future shoots and everything in between.  However, one of the standout developments from the past couple of weeks was securing our first postcard contract with Pikitia (http://www.pikitia.co.nz/).  Layton’s first postcard will be on sale at the Invercargill Airport shortly and hopefully this will be the first of many sales  We’ll be sharing some of our recent images this afternoon so make sure to check back in later today to check them out.

Happy Halloween everyone!

Happy Halloween everyone!  We’ve created an ‘All Hallows Eve’ image to mark Halloween this year.  Check it out above.  Also, keep an eye out on the blog early next week for some images from Bombay Palace’s Diwali Celebrations this weekend.

Hidden treasure

Trawling through my father’s old analogue gear and what do I find but his old Cokin P filters, Graduated ND, warming filter and ND, plus one unused roll of Sensia film.  Unfortunately I didn’t find the old EOS camera to go with the film. Still, it was a great wee haul and now all I need is the adapter for the filters and I’m in business.

Indian Bridal Shoot

Well this weekend we were extremely lucky to be able to have a photoshoot with a local Indian girl who had recently returned from getting married in her home country.

Fortunately she had bought back to NZ her wedding outfit and we got to photograph her in it at our local park.

Pictures to follow 🙂

Strobist shoots

So finally after weeks of piecing together our lighting kit we had our first strobist shoot the other night. It was a great experience and we learnt a lot along the way, one thing was to drag the shutter in order to get the ambient light to show up when using a flash to light our model.

Intro

Welcome to Findlater Photography.  We’re a husband and wife team from Invercargill, New Zealand.  We’ve been hobby photographers for the past 7 years and have recently made the leap into professional photography.  Layton is the principal photographer currently using a Nikon D800, while Aileen is 2nd shoot/assistant/admin and is currently using a Nikon D90 but looking to upgrade to full frame shortly.

Layton specialises in Landscape Photography (either scenic or urban) while Aileen is more detail orientated preferring to shoot macros, close-ups or details rather than wide shots.

To date Layton’s photos have been used in commercial brochures and magazines, printed in a book, and used as stock photos in varying media.  He has also sold a couple of pieces and done work exclusively on commission.

We decided to start this blog to not only share our images, but also to give them a bit of context and get some feedback.  As you will see in upcoming posts we’re currently gathering a decent lighting kit and experimenting with strobist photography.  So don’t be shy, leave comments and let us know how you think we’re going!
